- Stars GM Jim Nill plans to open Jason Robertson extension talks around Dec. 1
- Robertson is on a one-year, $12 million deal and can sign long-term starting Jan. 1
- Read below for what Nill and Robertson said and where the season stands
The Stars won’t talk extension with Jason Robertson until December.
Stars general manager Jim Nill told NHL.com’s Tracey Myers on Saturday that he plans to sit down with Robertson’s representatives around Dec. 1. Nill spoke before Dallas faced the Blackhawks at United Center.
Nill was asked about the timeline and explained why he wants to wait.
“I’m going to wait until probably around the first of December,” Nill said. “I don’t want any distraction. Just get off to a good start and I’ll sit down with his representatives around the first of December, see if we can get something done.”

Robertson signed a one-year, $12 million contract on July 21 as a restricted free agent, which avoided a salary arbitration hearing. He can sign a long-term deal starting Jan. 1, 2027, so a December sit-down would come about a month before that window opens.
The one-year deal also puts him on track for unrestricted free agency at the end of this season, which gives these talks real weight.
On Saturday, Robertson talked about how he is approaching the first stretch of the year.
“The first 10 games, OK, you get into it and after the first 20 you can start to reevaluate the season and everything,” Robertson said. “We’re still in that area with all the guys, (and) personally for me too.”
The 27-year-old has five points (two goals, three assists) in seven games for a Stars team sitting at 3-3-1. He also scored in the shootout in Dallas’ win over Colorado last week, which we covered in our Hintz shootout winner recap.
Catch the Stars’ shootout thread:
Last season he led Dallas with 96 points (45 goals, 51 assists) in 82 games, one goal shy of his career-high 46 from 2022-23. He added eight points (five goals, three assists) in six playoff games before the Stars lost to the Wild in the first round.
Dallas picked him in the second round (No. 39) of the 2017 draft. He has 495 points (215 goals, 280 assists) in 463 regular-season games and 52 points in 62 playoff games.
The Stars also added veteran winger David Perron on a one-year deal Friday, per our Perron signing story.
For now, the plan is simple: get through the first 20 games, then talk in December.
