The Flyers could ask Travis Konecny to waive his no-movement clause if this start keeps going sideways.
That comes from Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco, who wrote Tuesday that “approaching Konecny to waive his no-movement clause could be an option should the Flyers continue to struggle,” per team sources. Philadelphia sits at 0-5-2 with eight goals through seven games.
Di Marco also described the mood around the winger. He wrote that there is “a growing sense of frustration from within the Flyers organization with Konecny,” with one source saying the play often dies on his stick and that he is the one constant on a power play that has sputtered for years.
Konecny is 29 and in the second year of an eight-year, $70 million contract. He has led the Flyers in points in each of the last five seasons and hit 61 or more in four straight. He recorded only three assists in his first five games this year, then landed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury retroactive to Oct. 8.
Di Marco pointed to a style issue too. After years in John Tortorella’s rush-based system, there is an internal belief that Konecny’s game does not fit Rick Tocchet’s more regimented approach. Team sources told Di Marco that Tocchet is not going anywhere for now, which matches what Elliotte Friedman said on Monday.
Utah is the fit Di Marco floated. The Mammoth lead the Central with eight points, have cap space and are deep down the middle. Philadelphia liked Caleb Desnoyers, the fourth overall pick in 2025, and would have interest if Utah opened the door. Di Marco said the Flyers have no interest in Tij Iginla.
Any deal would run through Konecny himself. Players around the league have not been shy about using no-movement clauses lately, so the Flyers might be limited to asking. If they do trade for a veteran defenseman instead, Justin Faulk and Zach Whitecloud are the names Di Marco mentioned.
Konecny can come off IR on Oct. 15 against the Red Wings. The Flyers need a win before anyone is picking a destination for him.
