Roope Hintz got the last word. The Stars forward scored in the fourth round of the shootout to beat the Avalanche 3-2 at Ball Arena on Wednesday, and Casey DeSmith slammed the door by stopping Brock Nelson.
Colorado had a rough night even before the shootout. The Avalanche lost two goals in the first period and watched another effort bounce off both posts in the third.

Jaden Schwartz scored in the first, but the Stars challenged for offside and had it overturned. Later in the period, Gabriel Landeskog’s goal came off the board because he made a kicking motion to knock the puck in.
Landeskog did get one that counted. He deflected a Nazem Kadri shot past DeSmith at 4:55 of the second for a 1-0 lead, and Miro Heiskanen answered with a wrist shot from the left dot at 15:03.
Arttu Hyry put Dallas ahead 2-1 early in the third. He stole the puck from Cale Makar at his own blue line, outran the defenseman and went forehand to backhand past Scott Wedgewood for a short-handed goal at 1:20.
Nelson tied it 2-2 at 8:21 when a bouncing puck found him on the left side. Then came the Brindley moment. He started celebrating, but the officials never called it a goal, and replays showed the puck glanced off both posts and stayed out.
Hyry nearly won it in overtime, but his bouncing puck hit the post. DeSmith finished with 25 saves and stopped three of four shooters in the shootout. Jason Robertson also scored for Dallas in the skills contest, and Kadri scored for Colorado.
The win let the Stars split the back-to-back. They dropped the first game 3-2 at home on Tuesday, the night Hintz fought Nathan MacKinnon.
Makar was back in the lineup after missing Tuesday’s game for the birth of his twins. He played 22:54 and finished plus-1. Colorado was without Nicolas Roy, who has an upper-body injury.
Dallas lost Oskar Back to an upper-body injury in the first period, and he didn’t return. The Stars are 3-3-1 and head to Chicago on Saturday, while the Avalanche (4-2-1) host Sidney Crosby and the Penguins on Friday.
