- Yaroslav Korostelyov has terminated his contract with SKA St. Petersburg
- The 21-year-old goalie was a seventh-round Sharks pick in 2024
- Read below for the two-word reaction from Sharks president Jonathan Becher
The Sharks are about to have two goalies named Yaroslav.
Prospect Yaroslav Korostelyov has terminated his contract with SKA St. Petersburg and will report to the San Jose organization for the 2026-27 season, per Jeremy Garrett of Hockey News Hub.
Sharks president Jonathan Becher acknowledged the report on X by pairing it with the goalie already sitting on top of San Jose’s depth chart, Yaroslav Askarov. Two words and a handshake emoji covered it:
Nothing is official from the team yet.
Korostelyov went 194th overall in the 2024 draft, and his professional resume is close to blank. He spent last season under contract with SKA without ever appearing in a KHL game for them.
Most of his work came in the MHL, Russia’s major junior league, where he went 14-5-0 in 20 games with a .917 save percentage, a 2.22 goals-against average and five shutouts.
His 2024-25 season was louder. Across 27 MHL games he put up a 1.53 goals-against average and a .936 save percentage, the best mark among MHL goalies who played at least 20 games.
One VHL appearance is the extent of his pro experience, and it went badly. He gave up five goals on 31 shots and was out of the game after 33 minutes of a 6-1 loss.
Where he plays next is the open question. Eric Comrie, Matt Davis and Kyle Keyser are lined up for the bulk of the crease time with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda, which points Korostelyov toward the ECHL’s Wichita Thunder.
Goalies normally get a longer development runway than skaters, so pulling a 21-year-old out of Russia for a likely ECHL assignment is an unusual call.
San Jose came into the summer with the top-ranked prospect pool in the league. Korostelyov is nowhere near the front of that group, and Askarov owns the net at the end of it.
