Travis Green isn’t going anywhere in Ottawa.

The Senators announced Monday that they extended their head coach through the 2030-31 season. The team also gave multi-year extensions to assistants Nolan Baumgartner, Ben Sexton and Mike Yeo, plus goaltending coach Justin Peters.

General manager Steve Staios explained why the team wanted to keep Green in the team’s statement.

“When I was in the search to identify our head coach two years ago, it was clear to me that Travis had the qualities to move our team forward,” Staios said. “I have watched him implement systems and structures that have reinforced my belief in his coaching abilities. We share the same vision and philosophy and are confident we can continue to build on our team.”

Green took the job on May 7, 2024, when Ottawa was coming off seven straight years without a playoff spot. He has a 95-60-18 record with the Senators and has taken them to the postseason in both of his seasons. Both ended in the first round.

Ottawa came to Green after a 21-game stint as the Devils’ interim coach. Before that, he ran the Canucks bench for five seasons from 2017 to 2022. Four more years in Ottawa would make his seventh season as an NHL head coach and push him past his Vancouver run.

The Senators sit at 6-3-0 after trading captain Brady Tkachuk over the summer, and Thomas Chabot took over the captaincy from him. Tkachuk makes his return to Ottawa on Wednesday with the Panthers, and Green will be behind the bench for it.

Green and the whole staff now have a long runway to keep building.
