Connor McDavid just did something nobody has done in 31 years.

The Oilers captain hit 30 points through his first 10 games on Thursday, becoming the fourth player in NHL history to get there. Mike Bossy, Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux are the only others, and Lemieux’s 1995-96 season was the last time anyone pulled it off.

McDavid finished with two goals and three assists in Edmonton’s 6-5 shootout win over the Hurricanes. Leon Draisaitl had the exact same line.

The milestone point came early in the third period. McDavid picked up the secondary assist on a Draisaitl power-play goal that tied it 4-4, his fourth point of the night.

Check out the moment he got to 30:

Then came the finish. Zach Hyman appeared to tie it with 1:36 left, but the goal was waved off for a high stick. McDavid tied it 5-5 just eight seconds later, when a saucer pass meant for Draisaitl deflected off Jesperi Kotkaniemi’s skate and through Brandon Bussi’s five-hole.

Watch the equalizer:

That is eight goals and 23 assists for 31 points. It was his third five-point game of the year, after a five-point night against Utah and another against Vancouver on Oct. 1. He has a point in every game and 8 multi-point games.

Here’s the league’s full tally through 10 games:

The 30-point club has some big seasons attached to it. Gretzky put up 208 points in 1984-85, Bossy had 117, and Lemieux topped 160 all three times. McDavid already became the fastest player to 20 assists earlier this week.

At this rate he is on pace for about 260 points over 84 games, well clear of Gretzky’s record 215 from 1985-86. The Oilers sit at 8-1-1.
