- John Gibson left the Red Wings’ 5-2 win over the Canucks with an upper-body injury
- Michal Postava made his NHL debut in relief and stopped seven shots
- Read below for how Detroit got here and what comes next in goal
The Red Wings are waiting on news about John Gibson.
Detroit announced Thursday night that the goaltender suffered an upper-body injury during a 5-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks and that his return is questionable. Gibson did not come out for the third period at Rogers Arena.
Here’s the update from the team:
Gibson stopped four of the five shots he faced in the first period. The Red Wings then outshot Vancouver 13-0 in the second, so he never had to make a save before leaving, Daily Faceoff’s Hunter Crowther noted.
Michal Postava took over and made his NHL debut. The Red Wings recalled him from Grand Rapids earlier in the day because Daniil Tarasov was dealing with an undisclosed injury of his own, per NHL.com. Postava made seven saves in relief and picked up the win.
That leaves two Detroit goalies with injury questions in the same day. If Gibson misses time, the Red Wings are leaning on a goalie who had never played an NHL game before Thursday night.
The skaters did their part in the meantime. Lucas Raymond scored twice and added an assist, while William Wallinder, Michael Rasmussen and Emmitt Finnie also scored. Michael Brandsegg-Nygard and Viktor Arvidsson each had two assists.
The win pushed the Red Wings to 4-3-3 and extended their point streak to six games (3-0-3). Vancouver fell to 2-9-1 and has lost nine in a row.
Detroit is already dealing with plenty off the ice, including the ongoing Dylan Larkin trade situation. A goalie injury is the last thing a team on a six-game point streak wants to add.
The Red Wings did not say whether Gibson or Tarasov will be available for their next game.
