Ovechkin Movie Role: Caps Star Films ‘Hockey Dads 2’

Alex Ovechkin spent one of his last days of the Russian summer on a movie set.

The Capitals captain filmed his role in “Hockey Dads 2,” the sequel to a 2023 comedy about a group of youth hockey fathers who form their own team. Chris Cerullo of RMNB wrote Saturday that the film’s Instagram account had posted the first shots of Ovechkin working a scene next to actor Aleksey Bardukov.

Andrei Bulatov, who made the original, is back in the director’s chair. The sequel drops the same dads and their now grown-up kids into an international tournament called the “Games of the Future.”

Shooting has been running in Moscow and the surrounding region, and the movie is scheduled for release in 2027. Ovechkin is in several scenes rather than carrying the picture.

He is not the only hockey name on the call sheet either. Vladislav Tretiak and Alexei Kasatonov are also part of the cast, alongside Russian actors Mikhail Porechenkov, Yuri Chursin and Anya Chipovskaya.

Acting has turned into a summer habit for the 40-year-old. Last offseason he appeared in “Extra Time” with KHL veteran Vadim Shipachyov, a story about time-traveling stepbrothers, and he once popped up in the comedy series “Evgenich” to help a washed-up music producer find his groove again.

Washington gets him back soon enough. Ovechkin plans to fly home on September 10, and Capitals training camp opens September 17, the day he turns 41.

Dylan Strome said this week that the room had no idea for most of the summer whether their captain was coming back for another year.

Ovechkin’s 22nd NHL season starts next month. “Hockey Dads 2” does not reach theaters until the year after.
