Canada is back on top at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
The Canadians hammered the United States 8-1 in Saturday’s gold medal game in Edmonton, taking back a title the Americans won a year ago. It’s the 26th gold in program history at the under-18 tournament, and Canada got there without losing a game, finishing a perfect 5-0.
The rout started early. Brock England scored 84 seconds into the first period, and Maddox Schultz beat the American goalie short side before the frame reached its midpoint.
England struck again to make it 3-0. Gunnar Conboy got one back for the Americans with 97 seconds left in the period, and that was the only puck Leif Oaten let through all night. The Canadian goalie stopped 16 of 17.
Whatever hope the US carried into the intermission died in the second. Benjamin Veitch, Schultz and Liam Pue all scored to push it to 6-1, then Pue and Jaakko Wycisk piled on in the third.
Canada outshot the Americans 45-17. England, Schultz and Pue each finished with a pair. Watch all eight goals:
Landon Dupont ran everything from the back end. Canada’s captain set up both of Schultz’s power-play goals and closed the tournament with two goals and six assists in five games.
Scouts have him pegged as the first overall pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. The 17-year-old defenseman put up 73 points with the WHL’s Everett Silvertips last season and heads to Michigan this fall.
Asked afterward what the week meant to the group, Dupont kept it short:
“Ever since Day 1, this has been our goal.”
Finland grabbed bronze earlier in the day, wiping out a 2-0 Slovakia lead to win 3-2 for its first medal at the tournament since 2022.
Canada’s biggest name coming out of Edmonton was its youngest forward. Schultz, who turned 16 in April, led the whole tournament with 10 points, and he gets to run it back next summer when the Hlinka Gretzky Cup moves to Czechia.
