Alex Ovechkin finally has his first goal of the final season.
The Capitals captain scored career goal No. 930 on Sunday against the Seattle Kraken at Capital One Arena, ending a four-game drought to open the year. It came at 16:47 of the first period and put Washington up 2-1.
Watch the NHL’s post of the goal:
Ilya Protas found Ovechkin alone in front of the net, and Ovechkin sniped it past Daccord. Aliaksei Protas picked up the secondary assist. Ovechkin started the night at 929 goals.
The Capitals had their own take on it afterward:
Spencer Carbery was asked Saturday how worried he was about the slow start. He called himself “not even close” to concerned, and the goal came less than 24 hours later.
Our own timeline had the milestone as it happened:
The rest of the night went the Kraken’s way. Jordan Kyrou scored his first goal as a Capital to tie it 1-1, and Jordan Eberle tied it 2-2 with 20 seconds left in the first after Ovechkin’s goal.
Seattle took a 3-2 lead in the second, Boone Jenner tied it 3-3 less than a minute into the third, and Jared McCann put the Kraken back in front with about five minutes left. Brian Winterton added a breakaway goal, and the Kraken won 5-3.
Washington stays at 3-2-0 and hosts Carolina on Tuesday. Ovechkin has confirmed this is his final NHL season.
