  • The Flames and Red Wings have both discussed signing free agent Patrik Laine
  • Neither team has made the call yet, and Calgary is 0-5

Patrik Laine is still waiting on a phone call, and two of the league’s weakest offenses have talked about making it.

TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported on Insider Trading that the Flames and Red Wings have each discussed signing the unrestricted free agent winger. Nothing has turned into an offer yet.

LeBrun explained why the 28-year-old is still sitting there.

“There have been multiple teams calling at multiple times,” LeBrun said. “But no one has been willing to say, ‘Okay we’re going to bite now.’”

LeBrun called that strange, since Laine can sign a deal loaded with performance bonuses and only the base salary is guaranteed. He put the price in plain terms.

“For about $150,000 a month, you can get a seven-time 20-goal scorer,” LeBrun said.

Calgary has “kicked it around internally,” per LeBrun, but the Flames want to look at their young players first. That plan has not gone well. The Flames are 0-5 for the first time in franchise history and have been outscored 27-8:

Detroit has talked about it too, LeBrun said, while Laine skates in Florida waiting for the phone to ring. The Red Wings are 1-3-1 after Saturday’s shootout loss to Montreal and have scored just 10 goals in five games. They also have the Dylan Larkin situation hanging over the team.

Laine’s agent, Andy Scott, told LeBrun in The Athletic that his client is healthy, skating every day and ready to contribute right away. Laine played only five games for Montreal last season after core muscle surgery. He scored 20 goals in 52 games the year before.

LeBrun also noted the Kraken had interest early in the offseason but did not have room up front. Before this report, Finnish broadcaster Antti Mäkinen said the Red Wings and Kings were the most active teams, as we covered last week:

Laine last played an NHL game on Oct. 16, 2025. Both the Flames and Red Wings have room in the lineup and plenty of goals to find.
