Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras found himself in hot water on Sunday after a dirty hit on Michael Rasmussen and while he didn’t receive a penalty at the time, the NHL has reviewed the situation and punished the 23-year-old for his involvement in the incident.

Zegras has been slapped with a three-game suspension for this play in the overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings:

Beats me how Zegras wasn’t penalized there. He clearly lined up Rasmussen and blindsided him after the Detroit forward already released the puck in the neutral zone.

This is the first suspension of Zegras’s young career. Rasmussen went down in pain and had to exit the contest early. He never returned. Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan already ruled out the Vancouver native for Tuesday’s matchup with the Minnesota Wild. Rasmussen is listed as day-to-day.

“When a player gets a blow to the head and doesn’t return, it’s never a good sign,” McLellan said post-game, via The Athletic.

As for Trevor Zegras, it’s been another disappointing campaign for him. After missing most of last season through injury, he also had knee surgery in December and didn’t return until late January. He has just seven goals and nine assists in 34 games in 2024-25.

However, the Ducks are playing better lately, going 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. Zegras’s only other punishment since coming into the NHL came in 2022 when he was fined for slashing. He’s eligible to return on March 4 against the Edmonton Oilers.

Zegras is seen as a potential trade candidate leading up to next month’s deadline as well.
