The Blackhawks finally got their first win of the season Tuesday, and it cost them Teuvo Teravainen.

Head coach Jeff Blashill said after the 4-2 win over the Blues that the veteran winger won’t play Thursday against the Islanders. Teravainen isn’t traveling with the team to New York either.

Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times passed along the update from Blashill:

Teravainen got hurt in the second period. Blues forward Dylan Holloway went down near the boards and landed on Teravainen’s lower leg, leaving the 32-year-old sitting on the ice and clearly in pain.

Take a look at the injury video:

Chicago hasn’t put a timeline on it yet. Dr. Harjas Grewal, a physician who breaks down sports injuries on social media, figures it’s a medial or high ankle sprain based on the video. He said those often run four to six weeks, but added a shorter layoff is possible since Teravainen stayed in for a bit after it happened:

That’s an outside read, not a team diagnosis.

Wednesday morning, the Hawks recalled forward Dominic Toninato from the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs to fill the hole:

It’s a tough break for Teravainen, who had been finding his footing. He had two assists in three games after sitting as a healthy scratch on opening night, and he’d been skating on the second line with Anton Frondell and Tyler Bertuzzi.

He’s also the latest name on a growing injury list. Connor Bedard still hasn’t made his season debut, and Andrew Mangiapane is out week-to-week with a lower-body injury.

Last season was a rough one for the Finnish winger. He finished with 35 points (14 goals, 21 assists) in 75 games, down from 58 points the year before. Over his career, Teravainen has 554 points in 830 NHL games.

Tuesday was supposed to be a feel-good night, with Patrick Kane getting a huge ovation at the United Center. Instead, Teravainen stays back in Chicago while the Hawks head to Long Island, and his next evaluation will show whether this is a short absence or a long one.
