The man who ran Montreal’s draft table for most of two decades is back in charge of one.

Columbus announced Thursday that Trevor Timmins will oversee the club’s amateur scouting operation as director of amateur scouting. President of hockey operations and general manager Don Waddell laid out a handful of changes across the department.

Timmins is not new to the building. He joined Columbus in September 2022 and spent the past four years as assistant director of amateur scouting, one seat over from the job he just took.

Before that came two decades with the Canadiens. Timmins worked in Montreal’s hockey operations department from 2002 to 2021, finishing as assistant general manager from 2017-21 after earlier stretches as director of player development, director of amateur scouting and director of player personnel.

His draft boards in Montreal turned up Carey Price, P.K. Subban, Max Pacioretty, Brendan Gallagher and Cole Caufield.

Here is Timmins breaking down a draft class in his old title:

Ville Siren gets a new lane in the same department. He becomes director of European scouting after joining Columbus in July 2013 as head amateur scout and running the amateur department since 2016.

Waddell also reworked the training staff. Mike Vogt is stepping out of the head athletic trainer chair he held for 18 years, pointing to family commitments and the more flexible schedule that comes with staying on as an assistant athletic trainer.

Tom Bourdon takes that role after 16 seasons as head athletic trainer with the club’s American Hockey League affiliates, first with the Springfield Falcons and then in Cleveland. Chris Strickland shifts to assistant athletic trainer and physical therapist in his 19th season with the organization.

None of it changes the roster Columbus takes into camp, and that group already had a complicated summer in net.

What it does is hand the Blue Jackets’ draft board to the scout who found Price in 2005 and Caufield in 2019.
