ESPN’s John Buccigross thinks Dylan Larkin’s time in Detroit is almost over.
Buccigross shared what he’s been hearing while co-hosting Frankly Hockey with Frank Seravalli on Friday. He said he got word the night before that points to a deal.
“I think there’s going to be a trade within 7-10 days in Detroit. I got a little bit of information last night that tells me we’re going to see a trade. Things are happening in the lineup.”
Seravalli followed up by asking whether Buccigross meant Larkin or defenseman Simon Edvinsson, who is still out as a contract holdout. Buccigross said it was Larkin.
Take a look at the episode Seravalli posted:
Counting from Friday, that puts the window around Oct. 23 to Oct. 26.
Buccigross didn’t say where Larkin lands, and the Red Wings haven’t confirmed a trade is close. This is a prediction from a well-sourced voice, not a done deal.
The price is the sticking point. TSN’s Darren Dreger said this week that interim general manager Shawn Horcoff wants “three or four pieces,” meaning two A-quality prospects, an active top-nine forward and a first-round pick. We broke down that asking price earlier.
Larkin also controls where he goes. He has a short list of teams he would waive his no-trade clause for, and most are contenders without a pile of assets to give up. Minnesota and Montreal have been linked the most, and we covered the Canadiens angle when Larkin shot it down.
The 30-year-old asked out after Detroit missed the playoffs for a 10th straight season, and the Red Wings stripped his captaincy before camp. He scored 67 points (34 goals, 33 assists) in 74 games last season.
Buccigross’ clock runs out around Oct. 26.
