Senators captain Thomas Chabot left Saturday’s 3-1 loss to the Flyers with an upper-body injury and did not return for the third period.

Head coach Travis Green told reporters in Philadelphia that Chabot was dealing with the injury, according to Bruce Garrioch. Green did not have an update on how long it could keep him out.

The injury happened in the first period. TSN’s Steve Lloyd wrote that Trevor Zegras’s skate appeared to land directly on Chabot’s right wrist or hand, and that Chabot was favoring it in the penalty box right away. He went there for tripping on the play.

Watch the play:

Chabot kept playing through the second period. He finished with 12:03 of ice time over 16 shifts, one shot on goal and a minus-1 rating.

Ottawa can’t afford to lose him for long. The 29-year-old has one goal and three assists through nine games, plus 24 blocked shots, and he has been averaging more than 25 minutes a night. That is about three minutes more than any other skater on the team.

He is also the latest defenseman to go down. Steve Warne of The Hockey News pointed out that four of Ottawa’s six regular blueliners have now missed time already this season.

The one bit of good news is that Jake Sanderson, who has played just one game since re-aggravating an old issue on opening night, is expected back Wednesday, per Garrioch. Artem Zub is back too, and Nikolas Matinpalo returned Saturday after missing two games with a concussion.

The Senators fell to 6-3-0 in a game that handed Philadelphia its first win of the season. They are off until Wednesday, when Brady Tkachuk and the Panthers visit Ottawa.
