Lane Hutson and Cole Hutson will face each other in an NHL game for the first time Wednesday night.

The Canadiens visit the Capitals at Capital One Arena at 7:30 p.m. ET, and Montreal is calling it the inaugural Hutson Bowl. The game is exclusive to Prime Video.

It is also the first time the brothers have played against each other at any level, according to NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti. Lane, 22, is the 2024-25 Calder Trophy winner. Cole, 20, is a Washington rookie defenseman.

Lane was asked about facing his younger brother and kept it low-key.

“It will be cool, for sure, but it’s just going to be another game,” Lane said. “We’ve got to find a way to get some wins. Yeah, it will be cool for me and my brother. But I’m excited for it.”

Cole admitted it will feel a little strange, though he has history with this matchup. “I’ve been battling him my whole life, so I kind of know what he’s going to do,” he said.

Lane comes in hot. He scored in Tuesday’s 4-3 shootout win over Buffalo, and Montreal posted the goal:

Their dad, Rob Hutson, said the competitive streak runs through all four brothers. He runs the Hutson Pro Hockey Academy in Barrington, Illinois, and has broken up his share of summer fights.

Cole confirmed it got physical. “Definitely a lot of fighting out there during the summer,” he said. When he was asked if that meant punches, he answered, “Oh yeah.”

Rob also said whoever loses will not be happy. “Some time will go by, and they’ll be fine,” he said.

The styles are different too. Rob said Cole shoots more and plays more physical, while Lane defends with his stick and his brain. Lane is 5-foot-9 and 162 pounds, and Cole is 6-foot and 180.

Lane has four assists through five games and added a goal against the Sabres. Cole has one goal and two assists through his first five games, and Capitals vet TJ Oshie has been raving about him:

The two teams meet twice more, Jan. 19 in Washington and Feb. 13 in Montreal. We covered Lane’s size earlier this month in our lightest NHL players list, where he topped the board.
