James Reimer’s rough Rangers debut might have been about more than rust.
The 38-year-old goalie missed Tuesday’s practice with an upper-body injury and is considered day-to-day. He was pulled after one period Monday night in a 6-3 loss to the Kings.
Reimer gave up three goals on eight shots before Dylan Garand took over. We covered the debut the night it happened. Taylor Ward beat him on the very first shot:
Brandt Clarke tipped in the next one a few minutes later:
Mike Sullivan took the blame after the game. He was asked about the decision to start Reimer one day after he signed. “I put him in a tough spot and that’s on me,” Sullivan said.
It was a whirlwind stretch. Reimer signed a tryout in Hartford, posted a 35-save shutout for the Wolf Pack, and signed his NHL deal on Sunday. He played the next night.
Garand is the one who benefits. He had started every game since Igor Shesterkin went down on Oct. 9, so the plan was to give him a breather. Instead he played two periods Monday.
Spencer Martin is the obvious call-up if Reimer can’t go. Martin posted an .839 save percentage over 35 minutes in his only NHL appearance this season. Joonas Korpisalo is still out with a lower-body injury and isn’t expected back until the second week of November.
The Rangers are off until Sunday, when they host the Oilers at Madison Square Garden. That gives Reimer five days to heal.
