The Canadiens survived the cold and a late Winnipeg push to win the 2026 Heritage Classic.
Montreal beat the Jets 2-1 on Sunday at Princess Auto Stadium, with Jacob Fowler stopping 34 of 35 shots in front of a crowd that came to see the first big Jets game since the Hellebuyck trade.
Lane Hutson broke the ice at 7:19 of the second period. Noah Dobson and Cole Caufield got the assists on the goal.
Watch Hutson’s opener:
Kaiden Guhle doubled the lead less than four minutes later, at 11:04. Caufield picked up his second assist of the night on that one, along with Juraj Slafkovsky.
That was all the scoring Montreal needed. Winnipeg outshot the Canadiens 35-21, but Fowler held the shutout until Isak Rosen scored with 4:36 left in the third. Gabriel Vilardi and Haydn Fleury had the assists.
Stuart Skinner finished with 19 saves and got pulled for the extra attacker. Winnipeg picked up a power play when Josh Anderson went off for tripping with 1:32 remaining, but Montreal killed it off to lock up the two points.
The day started with a better moment for Winnipeg fans. Blake Wheeler, Dustin Byfuglien and Andrew Ladd did the ceremonial puck drop together, a few hours after Big Buff got a standing ovation at the alumni game. Check out the puck drop:
The Jets showed up in Top Gun bomber jackets and left with nothing to show for the 35 shots. Fowler was the difference, and Hutson and Guhle did enough on the other end.
