Highlights
  • Connor McDavid needed only nine games to reach 20 assists, the fewest in NHL history
  • He had three helpers in Edmonton’s 4-3 overtime win over the Wild, including the setup on Evan Bouchard’s winner
  • Read below for how the Oilers captain got there and where Edmonton stands

Connor McDavid just set another NHL record, and the season is barely two weeks old.

The Oilers captain collected three assists in Tuesday’s 4-3 overtime win over the Minnesota Wild, which gave him 20 helpers through nine games. No player in league history has reached that number in fewer games in a single season.

The last of the three came on the game winner. Edmonton drew a too-many-men penalty in overtime, and McDavid fed Bouchard at the top of the left circle. Bouchard, celebrating his 27th birthday, roofed a wrist shot past Jesper Wallstedt at 3:32 for the power-play goal.

McDavid also set up both of Leon Draisaitl’s goals. The first was a no-look, cross-ice pass on a 5-on-3 with three seconds left in the first period. The second came 63 seconds into the middle frame, off a feed from behind the net.

McDavid now has six goals and 20 assists for 26 points, and his point streak to open the year is nine games. We covered his hot start under Mike Babcock earlier this week, and the production has only climbed since.

The Oilers are 7-1-1 and have won seven of their last eight. They face the Hurricanes on Thursday.

He sits at 415 goals and 831 assists in 803 regular-season games. His best year remains 2022-23, when he put up 64 goals and 89 assists for 153 points. Nine games into this one, he already has 20 of them.
