The Sharks played Monday night without their captain.

Macklin Celebrini was ruled out of San Jose’s game against the Dallas Stars with a lower-body injury, the team announced shortly before puck drop. Here’s the word from Sharks PR:

Warmups looked normal at first, with Celebrini skating his usual line rushes on the top unit. Something was a little off, though.

Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now noticed the 20-year-old left warmups earlier than usual and skipped his routine of handing out pucks at the end. Take a look at Peng’s post:

There’s no word yet on how or when he got hurt. Celebrini played all 82 games last season, so sitting out isn’t something he’s done much of.

It’s a rough break for a Sharks team that opened 2-0-0. Celebrini had five assists through those two overtime wins, with three in a 4-3 win over the Panthers on Thursday and two more in a 5-4 win over the Kings on Saturday.

Ty Dellandrea drew into the lineup in his place. Alexander Wennberg moved up to center the first line.

We had the news up on X right after the Sharks confirmed it:

Celebrini finished fourth in the NHL with 115 points (45 goals, 70 assists) last season and placed fourth in Hart Trophy voting. He was named the 11th captain in Sharks history during training camp and has 183 points in 154 career games.

He’s also in the final season of his entry-level deal, which puts a little extra attention on every update about his health.

San Jose’s next game is Thursday in St. Louis. That’s the first chance for Celebrini to get back in the lineup.
