Matthew Knies keeps turning up in trade rumors. Toronto’s front office would like everyone to take a breath.
Assistant GM Ryan Hardy addressed the speculation Thursday on TSN’s OverDrive, and he did not sound like an executive trying to move a 23-year-old winger.
Hardy was asked where things stand with Knies.
“For us, we’re in contact with his group, as you always are with all your players,” Hardy said. “But Matthew Knies is an important part of the Maple Leafs, and anything beyond that is really just speculation.”
Watch Hardy on Knies:
That is about as direct as a front office gets in July. Hardy framed Knies as the kind of player a team wins with, not one it flips for picks.
The rumors have hung around anyway. Toronto reshaped its hockey operations department this offseason, and a new group running the show tends to draw questions about which core pieces are actually untouchable.
Knies landed in the noise earlier this summer when Seravalli reported the Leafs and Stars discussed a deal built around Dallas’s No. 7 pick. Trade boards keep pairing him with big-name targets too.
TSN floated one version this week:
None of it has produced a deal. Knies spent last season on Toronto’s top line next to Auston Matthews, and a winger with that role rarely moves unless the return is huge.
Hardy’s message Thursday was simple. Until a team meets Toronto’s number, Knies is staying put.
