Matthew Knies is in trade talks again, and this time a draft pick is attached.
Frank Seravalli reported Friday that Toronto and Dallas discussed a deal sending the Stars’ No. 7 overall pick to the Leafs for Knies. That pick came from Seattle.
Here’s how Seravalli laid it out:
The draft is why this is happening now. Toronto holds the No. 1 pick Friday night, and Seravalli says the front office has been chasing a second selection inside the top 10. Dallas’ No. 7 would get them there.
It all comes back to Robertson. He turned down an eight-year, $120 million offer from the Kraken this week, which scrambled Dallas’ plans and left the Stars hunting for top-six scoring another way.
Toronto isn’t giving Knies away cheap, though:
Chayka was singing a different tune a week ago. The Leafs GM called a Knies trade “not probable” back then, but a first-round pick in the mix changes things.
Knies is coming off the best year of his career. The 23-year-old winger racked up 23 goals and 66 points in 79 games and has grown into one of Toronto’s most important young forwards.
If the Leafs leave the draft holding No. 1 and No. 7, Knies will be the price.
