Jason Robertson needed just 5:20 to take over in Washington.

The Stars winger scored three straight goals early in the second period Tuesday night for a natural hat trick, and Dallas held on for a 6-5 win over the Capitals. It was the third-fastest natural hat trick in franchise history.

Watch the second goal that made it 3-0:

The first came on the power play only 23 seconds into the period. Robertson skated into the left faceoff circle with no one near him and beat Thompson on the glove side.

He took a drop-off pass from Arttu Hyry for the second, cut back to dodge a check from Jakob Chychrun along the right boards and put the puck between Thompson and the far post.

Check out the one that finished it:

His third was a snap shot from the point through traffic to make it 4-0. That sent Thompson to the bench with 14:17 left in the second, and Charlie Lindgren came in.

Robertson now has eight goals this season. Mikko Rantanen scored later in the second to tie him for the team lead. Joel Kiviranta opened the scoring midway through the first, Roope Hintz added a goal and an assist, and Jake Oettinger made 20 saves.

Washington didn’t go quietly. Jordan Kyrou had a goal and two assists, and Boone Jenner, Chychrun and Justin Sourdif also scored. Ryan Leonard got the Capitals within one on a six-on-five goal with 1:02 left, but that was as close as they got.

The win came with a scare for Dallas. Defenseman Miro Heiskanen left after one shift in the second period and didn’t come back. The Stars announced it was an upper-body injury:

Heiskanen came in with 11 points in 14 games and averaged nearly 26 minutes a night. The Stars haven’t said how long he’ll be out. They visit Columbus on Thursday.

Washington has lost two straight at home and hosts Florida on Saturday. Thompson had been day-to-day with an injury earlier this month, and this was his shortest night in a long while.
