Logan Thompson is hurting, and the Capitals aren’t saying how long it will last.
Washington announced Wednesday that its starting goaltender is day-to-day with a lower-body injury and did not skate at practice. He got hurt during Tuesday night’s 5-2 loss to the Kings.
The team shared the news before the skate:
Thompson went down early in the second period after making a save and stayed on the ice for a few moments. Take a look at the video:
He got back up and finished the game, stopping 21 of 25 shots. Thompson kept stretching his left leg the rest of the way.
Spencer Carbery was asked after the game whether he was worried about his goalie.
“Not as of now,” Carbery said. “I’ll talk to Serbs (head athletic trainer Jason Serbus), but nothing right now.”
Charlie Lindgren would take over as the starter if Thompson misses time. Mitch Gibson is the only other goalie on an NHL contract, so he would likely get the call from Hershey to back up Lindgren. Washington lost Clay Stevenson to Winnipeg on waivers late last month.
The Capitals have a cushion. They don’t play again until Saturday, when the Sabres visit Capital One Arena. A home-and-away back-to-back against the Flyers and Predators follows next week.
Thompson is 4-3-0 with a 2.90 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage through seven starts. He opened the year with three straight wins, then took the loss in three of his next four. Last season he went 31-21-6 with a 2.44 GAA and four shutouts.
Saturday against Buffalo is the first date to watch for his status.
