Jamie Benn is six points away from 1,000, and he’d rather talk about winning.
The Stars captain has 994 points (415 goals, 579 assists) in 1,260 games, all with Dallas. He has two this season, one goal and one assist, through eight games.
Benn talked with NHL.com’s Tracey Myers about how last season ended. Dallas lost to the Wild in six games in the first round, and he said that stung.
“I put in some good work this summer, changed a few things, and obviously the way we ended last year was not up to our standards. It motivated a lot of us in the summer to be better.”
The 37-year-old changed his workout routine and lost weight to keep pace with the younger, faster players around the league. He also took less money. Benn signed for $1 million last season and $850,000 this one, both on one-year deals.
Nill explained how the contract talks go each summer. He sits down with Benn after the season to see where he is, and Benn always comes back about a month later saying he wants another year.
“He understands he was paid very well, but he wants to win, so he’s willing to sacrifice the salary part for the ability to give us more options to sign players.”
Nill also called Benn “a little bit of a unicorn in today’s game,” since there aren’t many power forwards like him left.
Seguin, back from his ACL tear, has been Benn’s teammate since Dallas traded for him in 2013. He was asked about the coming milestone.
“It’ll be pretty sweet to see when it happens. I think if you ask him, he’s not going to say much about it.”
Benn isn’t wrong to shrug at it. The closest he has come to a Stanley Cup was the 2019-20 run to the Final in the Edmonton bubble, where the Lightning beat Dallas in six games. The Stars picked him in the fifth round (No. 129) in 2007, and he has worn the captain’s C since 2013-14.
Life away from the rink is going well too. His son, Knox Jay, was born April 3, 2025, and Benn said coming home to a happy kid is the best part of his day.
Dallas has plenty going on besides Benn, including the Jason Robertson extension talks set for December. Fans might remember Benn’s preseason fight with Marcus Foligno too.
The Stars host the Bruins on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET, and the countdown from six starts there.
