Jack Hughes ended it. The Devils star scored on a breakaway 1:19 into overtime Tuesday night to give New Jersey a 5-4 win over the Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena.
Jesper Bratt hit him with a pass up the middle after a Detroit turnover in its own offensive zone, and Hughes beat John Gibson to the blocker side, per NHL.com’s recap. Here’s the goal:
Hughes finished with three points. He assisted on the Hischier and Bratt goals, and Bratt matched him with a goal and two assists of his own. The Devils improved to 3-3-0 after a 4-1 home loss to Ottawa on Monday.
New Jersey came out flying and led 1-0 on an Evan Rodrigues goal in the first period, but Detroit kept answering. Emmitt Finnie tied it late in the first, and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard put the Red Wings ahead 2-1 on a 2-on-1 early in the second, even though Detroit was being outshot 18-4 at that point.
Anthony Mantha tied it with his first goal as a Devil, and Nico Hischier gave New Jersey a 3-2 lead on the power play. Then came a goalie mix-up. Jake Allen lost his stick, nobody got it back to him, and Alex DeBrincat scored on the next Detroit possession to make it 3-3.
Bratt answered at 16:52 of the second to put the Devils back on top:
DeBrincat wasn’t done. He tied it 4-4 with a one-timer from the left circle at 5:46 of the third. He finished with two goals and an assist on a day the Red Wings were reported to be locking him up on a seven-year extension.
Gibson made 32 saves and kept it tied late in regulation, which sent the game to 3-on-3. It took Hughes 79 seconds to settle it.
Detroit fell to 1-3-2 but picked up a point. The Devils host the Rangers on Thursday, and the Red Wings welcome the Flyers the same night.
