Alex DeBrincat is staying in Detroit.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Tuesday night that the Red Wings and DeBrincat were closing in on a seven-year extension worth roughly $13 million per season:
PuckPedia followed with the full terms, listing the deal as signed. The cap hit is $13 million, and the salary is front-loaded. DeBrincat gets $15 million in Year 1, $12.93 million in Years 2 through 6 and $11.35 million in Year 7.
The no-trade protection is heavy up front. He has a full no-trade clause for the first four seasons, a 10-team trade list in Year 5, an 18-team modified no-trade in Year 6 and a 13-team modified no-trade in Year 7. Here are the details from PuckPedia:
DeBrincat was set to become an unrestricted free agent next July. He’s on a $7.875 million cap hit this season, the final year of the four-year deal he signed when Detroit acquired him from Ottawa in 2023. The new contract kicks in for 2027-28 and runs through 2033-34.
The Farmington Hills native has earned it. He tied his career high with 41 goals last season and set a new one with 85 points, which led the Red Wings. He has four goals and eight points through six games this year, including two goals and an assist in Tuesday’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Devils.
Detroit needed a win off the ice. The Red Wings are dealing with a Dylan Larkin trade request, and Simon Edvinsson is still unsigned as a restricted free agent. Steve Yzerman stepped down as general manager in July, and Shawn Horcoff is the interim GM.
Keeping the top scorer off the open market takes one big question off the table. DeBrincat owns 298 goals and 603 points in 702 NHL games, and the Red Wings now have him locked up for seven more years.
