Mathew Barzal has seen enough of the Islanders third jersey contest to know which one he wants on his back.
New York’s 2027-28 third jersey fan vote is down to two designs, and Barzal handled the reveal in a video the team posted Monday. He was asked to pick a side, and he went with the navy sweater that has ISLANDERS spelled out in an arch against a cream backdrop.
“I like both. I would love to wear both. Unfortunately, we have to pick one and my choice is the Islanders jersey spelled out. It’s got a third jersey feel. I love the cream and the orange and the blue. And I love the idea of the logo being spelled out like that in the front.”
Watch Barzal walk through both concepts:
He kept going on why that one hits for him.
“It gives a Winter Classic third jersey energy so I would love to wear this one. I know the boys like it. The boys like both. Both jerseys will be great, but that’s my pick.”
The other finalist is the Navy Lighthouse sweater. That one runs orange and teal piping with white numbers and nameplate lettering outlined in team colors.
Getting to two took a while. The contest opened with more than 80,000 fan submissions, and the field has been trimmed round by round ever since.
Two navy designs went out in the last round. The Fisherman sweater and the “NY” logo version both lost their matchups, which we broke down here. Both of those logos have shown up on Islanders uniforms before.
The third and final round of voting runs Tuesday through Thursday at 5 p.m. ET. The winning design, along with any last tweaks to the full uniform, gets revealed in the days after the vote closes.
Barzal has already told the fans which way he is leaning. Now they get the last word.
