Jacob Fowler just did something no Canadiens goalie has ever done.
The 21-year-old stopped 30 shots for his second NHL shutout Saturday, then turned aside all six Red Wings shootout attempts in a 1-0 Montreal win at the Bell Centre. According to Nicolas Cloutier of TVA, Fowler is the first goaltender in franchise history to post a shutout and also allow no shootout goals in the same game:
Zachary Bolduc scored in the sixth round of the shootout, and Fowler shut the door on Nate Danielson to finish it. Detroit went 0-for-6 in the tiebreaker, the second-most attempts a Canadiens goalie has faced without giving up a goal. Carey Price holds the top spot after stopping eight Penguins shooters in a 4-3 win on Oct. 27, 2007.
Watch Fowler slam the door on the final shooter:
Fowler was asked about the emotion of the night after the game.
“It’s a pretty emotional game and I feel like you always stand a little bit taller after a big win,” Fowler said. “So I need to bring myself back down to earth a little bit here.”
Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki talked about what Fowler did for the team, including a short-handed save and a third-period stop on a Red Wings breakaway.
“He made some amazing saves short-handed, breakaways, shootout, so he’s obviously a huge part of that win,” Suzuki said.
Fowler is 21 years and 320 days old, which makes him the fifth Canadiens goalie with multiple shutouts at 21 or younger. Price had four, Jocelyn Thibault three, and Jaroslav Halak and Patrick Roy two apiece.
Montreal needed every save. The Canadiens had three goals waved off, including an overtime winner from Alexandre Texier that was ruled offside. They also went 0-for-4 on the power play and sit 1-for-17 on the season.
Fowler got the start with Samuel Montembeault out up to two weeks, and the Canadiens (2-2-1) snapped a three-game skid behind him. The crowd also chanted for Dylan Larkin early, which got plenty of attention too.
