Matthew Schaefer just passed Bobby Orr.

The Islanders defenseman scored his 25th NHL goal in 93 games during Sunday’s 6-3 loss to the Stars, moving ahead of Orr for the second most goals by a teenage defenseman in league history.

The goal came late in the first period with both teams playing 4-on-4. Schaefer skated down the left side and snapped the puck just over Jake Oettinger’s right shoulder and under the crossbar. Watch it:

The 19-year-old has been the story of the Islanders’ young season. He also made headlines earlier this month when he brought a young fan to the bench.

Dallas answered quickly. Jason Robertson put the Stars back in front 49 seconds later, wristing a shot past Ilya Sorokin’s glove from point-blank range after knocking down a Brayden Schenn pass behind the net.

Tyler Seguin had opened the scoring at 11:31 of the first, finishing off a 2-on-1 with Jamie Benn:

The Islanders kept coming back. Kyle Palmieri tied it 2-2 early in the second, and after Justin Hryckowian restored the lead on the power play, Schenn tied it 3-3 with 2:15 left in the period.

The third belonged to Dallas. Wyatt Johnston made it 4-3 with a wrist shot from the slot at 4:10, and Robertson broke away on a stretch pass from Seguin at 9:45 for his second of the night. Mikko Rantanen capped the scoring at 13:02 off a drop pass from Lian Bichsel.

Oettinger made 17 saves while the Stars put 38 shots on Sorokin, who stopped 32. Robertson now has eight points (three goals, five assists) during a four-game point streak, and Roope Hintz had two assists.

Dallas improved to 7-3-1 and has won five in a row, with Rantanen’s hat trick against Boston part of the run. The Islanders (5-4-2) saw a five-game point streak end.

The win also spoiled a return for Islanders coach Peter DeBoer, who coached Dallas for three seasons from 2022-25.
