Good luck getting into the last game at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Single-game tickets for Calgary’s farewell season went on sale Monday at 10 a.m. MDT, and the April 10 regular-season finale against the Canucks was wiped out almost immediately.
Jordan Jullian set an alarm and sat in the online queue for 30 minutes before the sale opened. She told Global News that none of it helped.
“I was one minute in (and) all the tickets were sold. I was actually in shock. I refreshed it a few times. I’m like, no way, this is like the Era’s Tour all over again.”
Resale listings went up almost as fast as the seats disappeared. Prices on third-party sites already range from $500 to nearly $1,500, and consumer protection expert Julie Matthews warned that scammers tend to follow that kind of urgency.
Steve Edgar, the director of game operations and strategy for Calgary Sports and Entertainment, was asked about the crush of demand for the finale.
“It’s not just about one game. We’ve got so many great opportunities here for fans to come in (and) share their stories with us.”
He has a point about the volume. Calgary has 44 home dates in the building this season, starting with a preseason game against Seattle on Sept. 20 and the regular-season home opener against the Kraken on Oct. 1.
Every NHL team gets one more trip to the ’Dome. Carolina makes its lone visit Oct. 18, and the Oilers come in for the Battle of Alberta on March 3 and March 23.
Robert Hayes, the president and CEO of Calgary Sports and Entertainment, framed the whole year as a thank-you in the club’s farewell season ticket announcement.
“For generations of Calgarians, the Scotiabank Saddledome has been more than a place to watch hockey, it has been where memories have been made and shared.”
The Saddledome opened in 1983 and hosted hockey and figure skating at the 1988 Winter Olympics. Next season the Flames move into Scotia Place, a $1.2 billion arena built for 18,400 hockey fans a few blocks away.
Flames players will wear a commemorative patch all season marking 1983 and 2027.
Unless Calgary makes the playoffs, that April 10 meeting with Vancouver is the last puck drop the ’Dome ever sees.
