Devon Levi is out for the Oilers on Saturday.

Head coach Mike Babcock told reporters after Friday’s practice that Levi is dealing with an undisclosed injury. Levi missed practice, and Babcock didn’t give a timeline for his return. Tristan Jarry will start against Toronto, and Edmonton will call up another goalie to back him up.

Take a look at the update from Babcock’s media availability:

Babcock didn’t name the goalie coming up. Matt Tomkins, who has started three of Bakersfield’s five games this season, looks like the likely call.

The news lands as a surprise because Levi stopped 27 shots in Thursday’s 6-5 shootout win over the Hurricanes. He has taken over the starting job, going 6-1-0 in seven of Edmonton’s first 10 games with a 3.11 goals-against average and an .887 save percentage.

Jarry is 2-0-1 with a 2.97 GAA and an .873 save percentage in three starts, and Saturday will be his first start since Oct. 17. Frederik Andersen, the veteran Levi credited for helping him earlier this month, is still sidelined, so Jarry is the only established goalie left.

The injury list keeps growing in Edmonton. Matt Savoie, Jason Dickinson and Mattias Janmark are also out, and Mattias Ekholm is expected to miss at least a week after leaving Thursday night’s game. The Oilers still sit atop the West at 8-1-1.

Puck drop is 4 p.m. PT on Sportsnet, with Jarry in the crease.
