Braeden Bowman’s night ended early after a nasty elbow to Matthew Poitras’ face. The Golden Knights forward was handed a five-minute major for elbowing and a game misconduct at 2:49 of the second period Monday at TD Garden.
Poitras was carrying the puck up the right wing boards in front of the benches when Bowman caught him high. The Bruins forward dropped to the ice and headed straight down the tunnel, bleeding badly. Here is the moment from our video:
Boston made Vegas pay quickly. Morgan Geekie scored on the ensuing power play at 3:23, just 34 seconds after the penalty, to make it 2-0. James Hagens had opened the scoring at 7:23 of the first.
Poitras did make it back to the bench. We caught him wearing a bubble with gauze stuffed up his nose, which tells you how bad that hit looked in real time:
He did not take another shift, though. Bruins coach Marco Sturm had no update on Poitras after the game. The forward has four goals and three assists in 11 games this season, and he started the year on injured reserve with a practice injury.
Vegas didn’t go away. Mark Stone cut the deficit, and Trevor Connelly tied it at 7:23 of the third. Mitch Marner extended his point streak to 10 games with two assists.
Then David Pastrnak settled it. He went backhand to forehand in the shootout and tucked it past Carter Hart for the only goal of the tiebreaker, giving Boston a 3-2 win:
The Bruins (11-4-1) have now won six straight at home. Vegas (9-5-2) is 1-3-2 in its last six.
Player Safety hasn’t announced anything on Bowman yet. It was a rough night for hits around the league, with Landeskog saying Levshunov’s hit on Makar deserved a review and A.J. Greer landing on injured reserve after the Cozens hit still fresh from the weekend.
