Aleksander Barkov does not do loud. The Panthers captain saves his words for when they matter, and this week he spent them on something bigger than hockey.
His comments came as part of UN Women Finland’s “Kaikkien miesten asia” campaign, which asks men to help prevent and end violence against women. President Alexander Stubb serves as its patron and personally challenged Barkov to join.
Barkov did not dodge it.
“I have noticed how in some situations, women are spoken to in a derogatory or inappropriate manner,” Barkov said in a statement for the campaign, reported by Finnish outlet Helsingin Sanomat. “I do not accept any kind of bullying or derogatory behavior towards women or anyone, and I will intervene in it.”

Barkov went a step further on what he expects inside his own room.
“In my time, everyone in the locker room is treated with respect, and inappropriate behavior or inappropriate talk about women doesn’t belong there,” he said.
None of this reads as out of character for him. The Finnish star has built his whole reputation on how he carries himself, on and off the ice.
Barkov won the 2025 King Clancy Memorial Trophy, the award for leadership and community work, and became the first player to take home the Selke and King Clancy in the same season. He has poured more than $420,000 into Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital through his #BarkovScores4JoeD campaign, donating for every goal and assist since 2019.
Add in a 2019 Lady Byng, back-to-back Cups in 2024 and 2025, and a run as the first Finnish-born captain to win it all, and you get a player teammates and prospects keep naming as a role model. His comments in Finland came the same week his name popped up again as a projected leader of the Finnish All-Star group.
