Alex Ovechkin isn’t slowing down. The Washington Capitals captain scored early in Friday night’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks for career goal No. 893.

But he wasn’t done there.

The Great 8 added a power-play goal in the third period to put the Capitals ahead for good.

Gretzky scored his 894 goals in 1,487 games and now Ovechkin has scored 894 goals in 1,486 games.

As if tying The Great One wasn’t special enough, Gretzky was in attendance to watch Ovi equal his record.

And, of course, his family was there as well.

The Capitals visit Metropolitan Division rivals New York Islanders on Sunday before returning home to host the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night. Those could be three long days off if Ovechkin doesn’t score on Long Island.

Ovechkin now has 41 goals in 60 games this season for his first 40-goal campaign since scoring 42 in the 2022-23 season. He now has 14 40-goal seasons in his career, and a mighty impressive 32 goals in the 48-game shortened season in 2013.

Simply put, Alex Ovechkin is the best goalscorer of all time. It’s only a matter of time now before it’s official in the NHL record books.
