Will Cuylle was in the middle of everything Sunday at Madison Square Garden.
The Rangers winger drilled Dylan Guenther from behind into the boards with 5:59 left in the second period, and the Mammoth were not happy about it. Cuylle went to the box with four minutes in penalties for boarding and roughing.
Watch the hit on Guenther:
A pileup formed along the boards right after. MacKenzie Weegar drew the roughing minor on Cuylle, while Mikhail Sergachev went off for cross-checking on the same sequence.
Utah made the Rangers pay right away. Nick Schmaltz scored on the power play 28 seconds later to tie the game 1-1.
Guenther stayed in the game and finished with 15:45 of ice time.
Jack McBain had seen enough, though. He made Cuylle answer the bell 63 seconds into the third period, and both players got five-minute majors for fighting.
Check out the fight:
This wasn’t Cuylle’s first run-in with Utah on the night. Vladislav Gavrikov opened the scoring with 2:42 left in the first, and a scrum broke out at center ice before the puck could even drop again. Cuylle and Barrett Hayton both took roughing minors.
Here’s the scrum:
It was a chippy one all around, with Vincent Trocheck making his return to MSG as a member of the Mammoth.
New York got the last laugh. Gabe Perreault and J.T. Miller scored in the third, and Eeli Tolvanen sealed a 4-2 win with an empty-netter.
Cuylle had the primary assist on Tolvanen’s empty-netter. He finished the night with a point, a hit and 11 penalty minutes.
