Shane Wright is going to Seattle Kraken training camp.
The 22-year-old center asked the Kraken for a trade back in July, and general manager Jason Botterill agreed to find him a new home. Two months later there is still no deal.
Wright’s agent went on the record Friday to say his client will not sit the season out over it. Kurt Overhardt was asked by TVA Sports whether Wright would report, and here is the statement he sent back:
“There’s nothing to discuss at this time. We’ll have to see how things develop in the coming weeks. Until then, Shane is fully committed to the Kraken.”
That is worth more to Seattle than it is to Wright. Every team in the league already knows he wants out, and a holdout would have handed the other 31 general managers whatever leverage they were missing.
Overhardt told Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman in July that he had held positive conversations with Botterill, and that the Kraken had agreed to move Wright this summer to a team in need of a young center.
Vancouver was where he wanted to go. Pittsburgh checked in too. Nothing came together.
Camp is the next date that matters. Seattle opens rookie camp Sept. 11, then heads to Abbotsford for a prospect showcase against the Canucks on Sept. 12 and 13. The veterans report Sept. 17.
Only four preseason games follow, so Wright does not get much runway to change anybody’s mind before the games count.
Last season is the whole problem. He managed 27 points in 74 games after a 44-point year in 2024-25, his faceoff rate slipped to 39.7 percent, and he averaged 13:48 a night in a bottom-six role.

Seattle took him fourth overall in 2022, and he is now in the final year of his entry-level contract with restricted free agency waiting next summer.
Wright turns 23 in January and owns 78 points in 169 NHL games. He gets one more run at fixing that in the sweater he asked to leave.
