Patrick Kane is one assist shy of tying the most assists ever by an American-born player.
Daily Faceoff’s Matt Larkin flagged the chase in his weekly Must Watch column. Kane sits on 893 career assists, while Phil Housley retired with 894. One more ties it, and two more makes Kane the sole leader.
This isn’t Kane’s first run at a U.S.-born record. Back in January, he passed Mike Modano for the most points by an American-born player in NHL history while playing for the Red Wings. Check out the league’s video of the moment:
Housley held the points mark himself until Modano passed him in 2007. He finished with 338 goals, 894 assists and 1,232 points in 1,495 games. Kane is now at 1,402 points after 1,375 games.
Kane has a goal and an assist through six games with Chicago. The goal came in the opener against Vegas, which we covered in his Blackhawks return. The assist came Thursday on a third-period power-play goal by Frank Nazar against the Islanders in a 4-1 loss.
The Blackhawks play three times this week. Pittsburgh visits Tuesday, the night all 32 teams are in action, followed by Winnipeg on Thursday and Dallas on Saturday.
That home date with the Penguins gives Kane the first crack at it.
