Alex Ovechkin ended up in the middle of a wedding photo shoot in Saint Petersburg, and the bride’s first thought was that a janitor had wandered into the frame.
The 40-year-old was in town for the 2026 Match of the Year, the charity game at SKA Arena on July 25 that mixes NHL and KHL stars. Ovechkin and his family stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel Lion Palace, roughly five miles from the rink.
Kristina and her husband were shooting wedding reels on the hotel staircase that morning when a man in a black polo, shorts and sneakers strolled through the shot carrying a hockey stick.

Their photographer stopped the take and told them to run it again. Nobody in the group had clocked who it was.
Speaking to RMNB, the bride explained what everyone assumed they were looking at.
“Frankly speaking, they thought that it was a janitor due to the hockey stick,” Kristina said, laughing. “It looked like a mop.”
Then she raised her head.
“I was so confused and excited. I said, ‘Hello,’ and asked him for the photo. He agreed,” she said.
What came out of it looks, with no context at all, like the NHL’s all-time goals leader was an invited guest. He is standing on the marble stairs beside the bride and groom, stick still in hand:
Both of them have followed Ovechkin since his Dynamo Moscow days, well before Washington took him first overall in 2004. Kristina put his standing back home in terms anyone can follow.
“For most Russians, Alex is like Cristiano (Ronaldo), but in hockey.”
Ovechkin also scored in the Match of the Year a few hours later, though Aliaksei Protas was the one who won it in the shootout.
That reel carries a thank-you to Ovechkin by his first name and patronymic, the formal and respectful way Russians address someone they look up to. The Russian text on it translates to a line about the odds of running into him on your wedding day being slim but never zero:
