Dakota Mermis isn’t going thirsty in Laval.

After the Toronto Marlies finished off the Laval Rocket 3-2 in Game 5 of their North Division semifinal Saturday afternoon, the home crowd at Place Bell didn’t take the news well. Beer cans started raining down onto the ice. Mermis grabbed one, popped it up to his mouth, and tipped what was left right down the hatch.

Watch the FloHockey clip:

The 32-year-old defenseman had every reason to be in a good mood. Vinni Lettieri’s tally, plus goals from Blake Smith and Reese Johnson, sent the Marlies to their first North Division Final since 2018. Owen Beck answered with both Laval goals.

Mermis has been a steadying veteran on Toronto’s blue line throughout the playoffs. He spent most of the season bouncing between the Marlies and the Toronto Maple Leafs, where the big club recalled him in late January to fill in for an injured Chris Tanev.

His old team in New Jersey will get a kick out of this one too. Mermis suited up for 10 games with the Devils back in 2019-20:

Up next: the Cleveland Monsters and a shot at Toronto’s first Calder Cup since 2018. Whatever Cleveland fans bring in their cup holders, Mermis seems ready.
