The Senators won in Boston on Monday night, but they might have lost their starting goalie in the process.
Linus Ullmark didn’t come back out for the third period of Ottawa’s 4-1 win over the Bruins. Travis Green was asked about his goalie after the game and said Ullmark “tweaked something” in a collision around the crease. The coach called pulling him a precaution, per the NHL.com recap.
The play happened with 4:24 left in the second. Thomas Chabot tripped JJ Peterka as the Bruins forward drove the net, and Peterka slid right into Ullmark.
William Eklund gave Peterka a shove afterward, and a scrum broke out behind the Ottawa net while Ullmark was slow to get up. Watch the Ullmark collision video:
Chabot went to the box for tripping. Ullmark stayed in to finish the period and stopped all 10 shots he faced through 40 minutes.
Samuel Ersson took over to start the third and made eight saves on nine shots in his Senators debut. The only puck that beat him came at 3:30, when a James Hagens pass deflected in off Ersson as he slid across. Ottawa acquired Ersson from the Maple Leafs on June 26.
There was one encouraging sign. Ullmark was back on the Ottawa bench early in the third period.
Up front, Tim Stutzle scored twice in 1:43 and added an assist as the Senators moved to 2-0. Check out the team’s post after the final horn:
Ottawa’s injury list is already growing. Jake Sanderson will miss at least the next two games with the lower-body injury he picked up against Toronto.
Through two starts, Ullmark is 2-0 with a .949 save percentage. He went 28-12-8 with a .891 save percentage in 49 starts last season, his second year in Ottawa after the 2024 trade that sent Joonas Korpisalo, Mark Kastelic and a first-round pick to Boston.
Next up is the second half of a back-to-back in Detroit on Tuesday, followed by the home opener against the Flyers on Thursday. Whether Ullmark is in the crease for either game is the big question for Ottawa this week.
