- Jets erase a 4-0 deficit in 2:06 of regulation to beat the Canadiens 5-4 in overtime
- Kyle Connor scores twice in 27 seconds, Dylan Samberg wins it at 3:30 of OT
- Read below for how Winnipeg snapped a nine-game losing streak
The Winnipeg Jets were nine games into a losing streak and four goals down in Montreal. They still won.
Winnipeg scored four times in the final 2:39 of regulation, then Dylan Samberg finished it 3:30 into overtime for a 5-4 win over the Canadiens at Bell Centre on Tuesday. It ended a skid that stood at 0-7-2.
Montreal had control for most of the night. Owen Beck, Josh Anderson and Cole Caufield (twice, both on the power play) built the 4-0 lead, and Caufield’s second goal came 46 seconds into the third period. Jets goalie Stuart Skinner finished with 18 saves.
Then it flipped. Tyrel Bauer scored his first NHL goal with 2:39 left after a dump-in took a strange bounce off the boards. Morgan Barron followed at 18:03 on a 2-on-1, beating Jacob Fowler glove side off the crossbar.
Kyle Connor tied it from there. With Skinner pulled, he fired a one-timer from the right circle to make it 4-3 with a minute left. He scored again 27 seconds later, with the shot deflecting in off Noah Dobson, to make it 4-4 with 33 seconds to go.
Watch Connor’s second goal that forced overtime:
In the extra frame, Gabriel Vilardi took the puck off Lane Hutson along the boards and Adam Lowry found Samberg cutting in. Samberg beat Fowler blocker side from the right circle. Fowler made 42 saves in the loss.
Here’s the winner, with the Jets calling it “a comeback for the ages”:
The win moves Winnipeg to 5-8-3 after a 7-0 loss in Carolina on Monday. According to NHL Stats, it was the latest a team has ever erased a four-goal deficit and won, and it was the fastest the Jets have ever scored four goals.
The result buys some breathing room around the club. Scott Arniel’s job status was a topic earlier in the day, and the team had also put Brad Lambert on waivers. One night won’t fix a 5-8-3 start, but the Jets finally got to celebrate something.
Montreal had won five straight and entered the night on an eight-game point streak (6-0-2).
