Moritz Seider reached 250 career points Monday night.
The Red Wings defenseman picked up two assists in a 5-3 win over the Florida Panthers, and both of them came on goals that mattered. That moved him to 39 goals and 211 assists in 425 NHL games.
Seider is the fourth German defenseman in league history to reach 250 points. Christian Ehrhoff, Uwe Krupp and Dennis Seidenberg are the other three. Seidenberg finished with 251, so Seider is one point away from passing him.
The first assist came early. Seider threw the puck around the boards from the right point, it landed on Carter Mazur’s stick, and Mazur put a wrist shot over Jacob Markstrom’s shoulder at 5:26 of the first period for his first NHL goal. Mazur talked about what it meant after the game.
“To get that one, it felt really special for me,” Mazur said.
Watch Mazur, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard and coach Todd McLellan talk about the win:
Seider added his second assist on Emmitt Finnie’s empty-netter at 19:57 to seal it. In between, Justin Faulk scored on the power play and Brandsegg-Nygard put Detroit up 4-2 at 2:53 of the third period.
The points have come in a steady stream this season. Seider has 10 assists in 15 games and no goals yet. He had 60 points (10 goals, 50 assists) last season, a career high, and the pace this year is not far off.
Detroit is 7-5-3 and has won three of its last four, even with the Dylan Larkin trade request still hanging over the room. Seider spoke last week about turning the page after the Larkin suspension, and Monday was another night where he did his part on the ice.
The Red Wings also had a scoring milestone of their own to point out:
Alex DeBrincat has 16 points, Viktor Arvidsson 15 and Lucas Raymond 15 through the first 15 games. It is the first time Detroit has had three players with 15 or more points through 15 games since Henrik Zetterberg, Nicklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk did it in 2010-11.
Detroit gets Tampa Bay on Tuesday night in the second half of the back-to-back.
