- Referee T.J. Luxmore picked it up and offered it to him during a stoppage

Somebody in Toronto threw an apple at Jacob Fowler on Saturday night. A referee then tried to hand it to him.
The Canadiens goalie confirmed after Montreal’s 4-2 win over the Maple Leafs that a fan tossed a green apple toward his crease in the second period. It hit him during the play, and Fowler said he joked with the official about whether a goal against him would have counted.
Watch the NHL’s video of Luxmore holding it up for him:
The apple landed with about 8:30 left in the second, and Luxmore held onto it until play stopped. Then he showed it to Fowler and offered it over. Fowler was asked about it after the game and kept it light.
“I’m used to tracking a black puck, not a green apple,”
Fowler said he’d never seen anything like it before. He wasn’t laughing in the moment, though. He thought it was hilarious afterward, but not so much while the puck was live.
The stunt did nothing to throw him off. Fowler stopped 26 shots for his eighth win of the season, and Zachary Bolduc added an insurance goal on the power play to seal it.
The 21-year-old started the year in Laval and has been Montreal’s guy since Samuel Montembeault went down in October. He’s 8-1-1 in 10 appearances with a 2.15 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage, with two shutouts.
The Canadiens (11-3-3) are tied with Boston for first in the Atlantic. Toronto also lost Morgan Rielly to an injury in the game.
Montreal hosts the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday.
