The Red Wings are not trading Simon Edvinsson, at least according to the man running the team.

Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff shot down the idea Wednesday when he spoke to reporters in Detroit.

Horcoff was asked about the unsigned defenseman and the trade chatter that has followed him for two weeks. He didn’t leave much room for interpretation.

“I have zero interest in trading Simon Edvinsson,” Horcoff said. “Not something I’m entertaining. We want to sign him.”

Horcoff added that he has been in constant contact with Edvinsson’s agent. Nothing has been finalized, though. The 23-year-old restricted free agent is still without a contract and went back to Sweden before the season started.

That is a different tone than what teams were hearing last week. We reported that Edvinsson preferred a trade after Elliotte Friedman brought it up on Hockey Night in Canada, and Frank Seravalli later said Detroit was open to a futures-based package for him. Boston has been named as one possible landing spot.

Horcoff also had a quick update on Dylan Larkin. There isn’t one.

Larkin asked for a trade over the summer and is still in Detroit with five years left on his deal. He has one goal and one assist through four games.

The Wings have locked up Alex DeBrincat on a seven-year, $91 million extension and sit on more than $17 million in cap space, per PuckPedia. Edvinsson is coming off a three-year, $2.68 million entry-level deal and could reach unrestricted free agency in 2030.

Detroit has won just one of its first six games, going 1-3-2, and hosts the Flyers on Thursday night.
