- Cole Caufield says there is no excuse for the Canadiens blowing a 4-0 lead to the Jets
- Martin St. Louis said Montreal was winning but not beating Winnipeg
- Read below for what both benches said after the latest four-goal comeback in NHL history
Cole Caufield didn’t dress up what happened at Bell Centre.
The Canadiens forward was asked about blowing a 4-0 lead in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Jets on Tuesday night, and he kept his answer short.
“The guys thought the game was over, I think,” Caufield said. “Listen, a four-goal lead, there’s no excuse for this. Yeah, it was terrible.”
Caufield did his part. He scored twice, both on the power play, including one 46 seconds into the third period that made it 4-0. Montreal had won five straight and Jacob Fowler had stopped the first 37 shots he saw.
Then Tyrel Bauer scored his first NHL goal with 2:39 left, and Winnipeg scored four times in 2:06. Kyle Connor tied it with 33 seconds to go, and Dylan Samberg won it 3:30 into overtime.
Watch the Jets bench after the comeback was complete:
Martin St. Louis was asked about the game and said his team wasn’t in control as much as the score showed. “You look at that game, we were winning but we weren’t beating them,” St. Louis said.
Jets coach Scott Arniel pointed to the shot count. Winnipeg had 86 shot attempts, and Arniel was asked about Fowler, who made 42 saves in the loss. “That young Fowler kid, wow,” Arniel said. “That’s twice now I’ve seen him. I don’t want to see him anymore.”
We broke down the full collapse in our earlier Jets recap. Here’s the graphic we put out on the record:
The comeback started at 57:21, the latest a team has ever erased a four-goal deficit and won. The Kings held the previous mark with a rally that began at 52:46 against Dallas in 2007.
Montreal sits at 9-3-3 with a point in eight straight games. The Canadiens play the Utah Mammoth on Thursday.
