The Stars may have dodged the worst on Miro Heiskanen.
Dallas head coach Glen Gulutzan said after Tuesday’s 6-5 win over the Capitals that the team is hoping Heiskanen’s upper-body injury isn’t as serious as it first looked. He’ll be evaluated again Wednesday.
Gulutzan was asked about the defenseman’s status after the game.
“We’re gonna have him evaluated again. We’re hoping right now that it’s not as serious as we first thought, so we’ll know more tomorrow. I think a little bit more how he wakes up. So we’ll re-evaluate then.”
Heiskanen played one shift in the second period and didn’t come back. He took a hit from Capitals forward Justin Sourdif along the boards on that shift. The Stars announced during the intermission that he wouldn’t return:
The Stars haven’t said what the injury is beyond “upper body.” Nothing in the team’s update points to a specific diagnosis, so Wednesday’s evaluation is the next real piece of news.
Losing him hurts. The 27-year-old has three goals and 11 points in 14 games and was averaging 25:58 of ice time, which sits tied for sixth in the NHL. He plays the top pair next to Esa Lindell and runs minutes on both special teams.
Dallas held on without him, even after the Capitals pulled within a goal late. Jason Robertson’s natural hat trick had the Stars up 4-0 early in the second, and we covered how the rest of that game played out in our Robertson recap. The win moved Dallas to 9-5-1.
Heiskanen is coming off a 63-point season in 77 games after a knee injury and surgery cost him most of 2024-25. He’s signed through 2028-29 at $67.6 million. We also tracked his playoff injury situation back in April.
Dallas plays Thursday night in Columbus. Whether Heiskanen is in the lineup depends on how that evaluation goes.
