The Capitals made it official on defense Monday.

General manager Chris Patrick announced that Rasmus Sandin is on long-term injured reserve and Matt Roy is on injured reserve. Washington recalled veteran blueliner Justin Holl from the Hershey Bears to fill the gap.

Here’s the team’s announcement:

Neither move means a new injury. Sandin has yet to play this season while working back from the torn ACL he suffered April 11 against the Penguins. The Capitals pegged his recovery at six to nine months, which puts a return somewhere between late October and late January. Patrick has said he was hopeful Sandin would land closer to the early end of that window, as we covered in our Sandin injury update.

Roy has been out since leaving the Oct. 3 game against Tampa Bay with a lower-body injury. The placement can be retroactive to that date, so he’s already served the seven-day minimum and can return as soon as he’s cleared. The 31-year-old logged 22:29 in the season opener.

Holl is 34 and has played 405 NHL games with Toronto and Detroit. He cleared waivers at the end of camp and played three games for Hershey without a point. His contract runs one year at $900,000.

The timing is tight. Washington (3-2-0) visits Carolina on Tuesday and faces Montreal on Wednesday with a short blue line. Dylan McIlrath played just 5:04 in Sunday’s 5-3 loss to Seattle, so Holl may get a look quickly.
