Rod Brind’Amour got his day with the Stanley Cup, and the picture everyone is going to remember has a puppy sitting in the bowl.
The Carolina Hurricanes coach spent Thursday carrying the trophy around Raleigh, and he started at the Raleigh Police Department’s Southwest District to thank the officers who work off duty at Lenovo Center. One of them turned up in a red captain’s sweater with No. 17 on it. Somebody else had the good sense to set a dog in the Cup.

He stayed long enough to sign a stick blade, a jersey and whatever else got pushed across the table.
Next came St. Timothy’s School, the private school his kids attended. Students and staff met the coach and the trophy out in the parking lot, then packed the hallways and clapped the whole way through, according to NHL.com.
Snack time landed at Sugar Koi Ice Cream, where Brind’Amour and his wife, Amy, ate straight out of the trophy:
The night finished the way most of these days finish, with a house full of the people who won the thing together. Keeper of the Cup Philip Pritchard posted a shot of the coach and a handful of his players crowded around the trophy under a wall of red and black balloons.
Raleigh has been home for a long time. Philadelphia traded Brind’Amour to Carolina in January 2000, and he never left.
He captained the 2006 team to the franchise’s first championship and coached the 2026 group to its second. That makes him the seventh person in league history to win the Stanley Cup as a player and a coach with the same organization.
The Hurricanes are favored to repeat this season, which would hand him a third one.
Twenty years between the first two, and the second came with a puppy in the bowl.
